It is the part of dentistry that studies, prevents and corrects problems of malocclusion, malposition or dental crowding, to restore the balance of both function and aesthetics. Orthodontics faces problems that go far beyond the simple placement of teeth for aesthetics. It faces the correction of maxillary and jaw alterations, alterations of the face and, above all, functional disorders of chewing. Untreated malocclusions can lead to problems with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), speech, chewing, gum problems and premature wear of certain teeth.
There are many types of orthodontic devices: metal braces, sapphire aesthetics braces, self-ligating braces, lingual orthodontics, invisible orthodontics, orthopaedic devices… We have all of them at the Centro Clínico de Especialidades Odontológicas, but it is important to know which one is the most appropriate for each patient. We work through a previous study, according to which our orthodontic specialist analyses the specific case, takes measurements, takes photographs and x-rays. With all that, she makes a diagnosis and defines what will be the best technique to use, how long the treatment will last and she will explain what the final result will be.
